The Green Energy installer is a certification program for students who have an interest in working in the renewable energy industry. The program is flexible, student-focused and emphasizes hands-on, practical training, using equipment typically encountered in the renewable energy industry. ACE Community College?s 3200 sq feet workshop is totally focused on industry practice for the practical training. The necessary theoretical work component is integrated into the program to complement and enhance the practical. Industry tours will expose the student to a variety of work environments

The clean energy sector?s GDP is forecast to grow by 58% by 2030. The surge in environmental awareness and sustainability has changed consumer patterns of energy use. With more people choosing green energy, electric and hybrid cars have increased demands in Canada?s clean energy sector.

These trends have created attractive and flexible employment, competitive remuneration, comprehensive benefits, and opportunities for career advancement. Full-time and part-time employment and contracting opportunities are available to graduates within:

Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing units
Hydrogen fuel cells manufacturers, namely Loop energy and Ballard powers.
Solar farms
Wind farms
Residential/commercial renewable energy projects
Electrical car charging stations.

Learning Objectives:

After completing a mathematics review, students will attend worksafe BC and workplace safety training followed by work safe BC Occupational safety officer?s presentation and discussion. Students will learn:

Basics of Canadian electrical code (focussing on application to renewable energy sector).
Read and interpret drawings; basic electrical principles .
Apply the Canadian Electrical Code to renewable energy system installations.
How to install a battery bank that powers up a wind generator via a charge controller.
Understand basic functions of hand tools and power tools and how to operate them.
How a basic hydraulic braking system circuit works storing energy and retrieving the stored energy for use when required, electrical code requirements for stored energy systems, production of electrical energy by fuel cells, and monitoring of fuel cell and energy storage systems.
Understanding how a basic Solar Photo-voltaic module works.
Apply solar photovoltaic systems safety principles and practices including controlling for identified risks; key points to know regarding solar photovoltaic pre-installation/ on-site implementation strategy;.
Domestic electrics and EV car charging point installation.
Practical application of theory is demonstrated in shop of our campus.
Training towards certification for WHMIS, confined spaces and ladder safety training.
Program Duration;

Program duration length is 6 weeks which is a total of180 hours.

Admission Requirements

Domestic Students:

Domestic students that can provide a Canadian transcript showing completion of English 11 or 12 or equivalent) with a passing grade of ?C?, will be exempt from having to write the English Entrance Assessment.
Domestic students that can provide a Canadian transcript showing completion of Math 10, 11 or 12 (or equivalent) with a passing grade of ?C?, will be exempt from having to write the Math Entrance Assessment
International Students:

International students can meet the Math Entrance Assessment requirement by providing an equivalent to Canadian High School Math 10, 11 or 12 with a passing grade of ?C?. The credential must be evaluated and verified.

Certificate Requirements

Applicants must successfully complete all on-campus test and final exams with a minimum of 50% overall average. Also they must complete all the trainings which includes confined spaces, ladder safety and WHIMS during the program.

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

Apply solar photovoltaic systems safety principles and practices including controlling for identified risks.
Supporting crew involved in development of solar photovoltaic pre-installation on-site implementation strategy.
Assist in installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of solar photovoltaic systems.
Support in Installation of geothermal and solar thermal heating systems in conformance with the Canadian Electrical Code.
Assist in testing RTD and thermocouple sensors.
Assist in Installation and connection of batteries, battery charging systems including inverters and fuel cells.
Apply safe work practices in renewable energy storage, production and retrieval systems.
Will be able to install a domestic EV car charging point.

Weekly on campus tests will be conducted
In the end , students will be given a final exam
