PRE-REQUISITES: Any college diploma OR university degree regardless of field. Any foreign credential must be assessed using WES or ICAS to determine its equivalency to a Canadian college degree or university diploma.

PROGRAM OUTLINE

Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management – During this program
of study, the students gains both theoretical and practical training in the required
courses.

Principles of Microeconomics: Introduces demand, supply, elasticity, equilibrium, price determination in different market situations, and resource allocation and utilization in a market/mixed economy.

Corporate and Business Law I: Introduction to the Canadian Legal System, courts, tribunals, and procedures, including torts, contract law, sole proprietorship, partnerships, and corporations. Explore employment law, termination and dismissal, collective bargaining, and consumer protection and safety. Students also learn about environmental law, real estate laws and land transactions, intellectual property, patents, trademarks, bankruptcy and insolvency in Canada, and associated legislation.

Financial Accounting I: Introduces to objectives and fundamental concepts of accounting, analyzing and recording of financial transactions; preparation of income statements; accounting for merchandising business, fund flow analysis, payroll accounting and employer?s payroll expenses.

Business Communication: Introduces to the fundamental principles of effective business communication in global environment, stressing on the skills necessary for developing, planning, organizing, outlining and editing various business documents.

Keyboarding Skills: Introduces skills for proper use of home row and posture to increase speed and accuracy.

Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint: Introduces to the skills, training and assessment of computing concepts and techniques to gain proficiency in word processing, spread sheet functions and impact of computing on the present day society.

Human Resource Management: Introduces to the theoretical and practical aspects of human resource management including job analysis and design, recruiting, retention, training & compensation systems, employees? health & safety with emphasis on contemporary governmental, legal requirements and international competition.

Introduction to Marketing: Introduces students to the world of branding, advertising, and marketing, including new tools like Google Analytics and online marketing.

Fundamentals of Management: Examines management processes, structure and behavior, focusing on the changing nature of management. Emphasis is placed on global management perspectives, individual and group decision making, organization culture and structure design.

Simply Accounting: Introduces the use of Simply Accounting to complete an entire accounting cycle, including the production of financial statements.

QuickBooks: Introduces to the implementation of computerized accounting software package, recording of accounting transactions and peroration of financial statements, as well as creating an appropriate accounting system using the business database.

Financial Accounting II: Introduces to various categories of capital assets, their amortization and accounting for intangible assets, current liabilities and their classification along with organization and operations of corporations and partnership forms of business.

Principles of MacroEconomics: Covers demand, supply, elasticity, equilibrium, price determination in different market situations, and resources allocation and utilization in a market/mixed economy.

Managerial Economics: Focuses on the role of economics and the application of economic analysis in managerial decision making. Covers economic forecasting, game theory, production theory, consumer behavior theory, pricing theories and strategies, and macro economics in decision making.

Business and Society: provides overview of the basic components of processing systems, namely environment, software, hardware, people, behavior, tasks, and connectivity. Will cover software functionality to support group productivity, and designing and implementing a user interface using software package.

Business Mathematics: Introduces to the essential concepts of making business related calculations.

Corporate and Business Law II: Focuses on the agency relationship, securities regulations, and the legal liabilities of accountants. Covers laws relating to Property, Bailment, Employment Laws, Negotiable Instruments, Bankruptcy, Anti-trust laws, Consumer Protection and Environment Regulations.

Introduction to Entrepreneurship: Looks at entrepreneurial behavior; the role of the entrepreneur in society; conditions necessary for it to evolve; the development of venture, acquisition, and expansion.

Fundamentals of Operation Research: Covers transportation, assignment, inventory control, queuing models, and Markov processes.

Management Information Systems: Provides overview of basic components of processing systems, namely environment, software, hardware, people, behavior tasks, and connectivity. Students will learn about software functionality to support group productivity; access to organizational data and external data; designing and implementing a user interface using software package.

Corporate Finance I: looks at inflation and uncertainty got effective financial management. Covers theory of finance, making sound business decisions in the areas of financial analysis, forecasting and leveraging amongst other practical issues.

Fundamentals of E-Commerce: Covers trends, growth and increasing opportunities in the electronic business area. Also covers issues related to management, planning, and design of electric business.

Business Values and Ethics: Introduces the categories and framework of philosophical ethics in selected professions and the role of the government and issues of corporate governance.

Business Statistics: Covers classification of data, diagrammatic and graphical representations, measures of central value and dispersion, skewness, sampling techniques and sample designs. Covers various theories, distribution, statistical quality control, and testing methods, as well as analysis of variance.

Managerial Accounting: Covers managerial accounting and compares it to financial accounting. Looks at job order costing, process costing, and activity based costing. Introduces management decision making process through knowledge of cost-volume-profit and incremental analysis.

Preparing a Business Plan: Students get the opportunity to investigate a new business venture of their interest and determine its feasibility. Students will prepare a business plan and present their products and services in a professional manner.

Project Evaluation: Focuses on practical situations to enable students to develop skills for evaluating the projects, formulating evaluation plans, policy approaches and methods.

International Business and Marketing: Looks at business environments, financial transactions, and international marketing. Also looks at role of multinational enterprise, role of
culture, legal technological and political forces including emerging trends and issues related to international management. Examines the impact of economic, cultural, political, legal, and environmental influences on worldwide marketing opportunities. Explores products, international distribution and promotion strategies.

Purchase and Supply Management: Provides an overview of supply organization and processes; quality, specifications and services; quantity and inventory management, price, discounts and cost management. Also looks at in sourcing, outsourcing, and building supplier relations.

Leadership: Looks at dynamics of leadership, initiation and management in the face of changing environment serving the organization. Looks at nature and characteristics of transactional leadership; relationships of power, authority and responsibility to leadership effectiveness including conflict management.

Business Research Methods: Reviews research methodology associated with various types of projects and statistical problem and formulation of research questions, literature review, data collection, and data analysis methods and dissemination of research findings.

Corporate Finance II: Covers areas of valuation and rates of return as well as determining the cost of capital. Looks at working of the capital market as well as the sources of long term debt and leasing; dividend and retained earning policy of the organization and its effects.

Cross Culture Management: Examines the challenges and opportunities of managing cultural diversity in organizations with emphasis on the transnational enterprise. Introduces phenomena of globalization, culture and organizational culture, and cultural synergy. Teaches strategies for hedging cultural; gaps.

Strategic Management: Provides an overview of the economic, cultural, psychological, sociological, technological, and political aspects of the global environments confronting environment serving organizations. Includes industry analysis, competitive analysis, and situation analysis, implementing strategy, and assessing strategic performance.

Introduction to Business Organization: The course introduces essential business concepts and the relevant and related terminology for a better understanding of the organizations, the environment in which they operate. Students explore principles, theories, concepts and practices of the business world. Classroom discussion takes place on business entities, social responsibilities, organization structures, staffing, management processes, cultural diversity, and conflict resolution and negotiation.

Organizational Change Management: Looks at logical reasons why organizations must change, and why people and companies are resistant to change. Prepares students to institute change and develops skills needed to communicate change for a smoother transition. Provides tools necessary to effectively manage change in a dynamic technology environment.

Seminar in Business: Prepared independently by the students on a business topic to prepare students to articulate their business know-how and skills.

Management/Business Project: Students will develop and implements a management or business related projects that meet stated business objectives for an organization in a specific vertical market.

Professional Skills: Prepares students with every aspect of their transition into their new career by identifying and teaching essential business and interpersonal skills. Students receive in class lectures, as well as a private one-on-one appointment with a Career Services specialist to perfect their resume package and interviewing skills.

1122 – Professional occupations in business management consulting – This unit group includes those who provide services to management such as analyzing the structure, operations, managerial methods or functions of an organization in order to propose, plan and implement improvements. They are employed by management consulting firms and throughout the public and private sectors or are self-employed.

1112 Financial and investment analysts – Financial and investment analysts collect and analyze financial information such as economic forecasts, trading volumes and the movement of capital, financial backgrounds of companies, historical performances and future trends of stocks, bonds and other investment instruments to provide financial and investment or financing advice for their company or their company’s clients. Their studies and evaluations cover areas such as takeover bids, private placements, mergers or acquisitions. Financial analysts are employed by a wide range of establishments throughout the private and public sector, such as banks, brokerage houses, insurance companies, investment companies, manufacturing firms, trust companies, utility companies and underwriting firms. Investment analysts are employed primarily by brokerage houses and fund management companies.

1211 Supervisors, general office and administrative support workers – Supervisors in this unit group supervise and co-ordinate the activities of workers in minor groups: General Office Workers and Office Equipment Operators. They are employed throughout the public and private sectors.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Management consultants perform some or all of the following duties:

Analyze and provide advice on the managerial methods and organization of a public or private sector establishment.
Conduct research to determine efficiency and effectiveness of managerial policies and programs.
Conduct assessments and propose improvements to methods, systems and procedures in areas such as operations, human resources, records management and communications.
Conduct quality audits and develop quality management and quality assurance standards for ISO (International Organization for Standardization) registration.
Plan the reorganization of the operations of an establishment.

Plan short- and long-term cash flows and assess financial performance.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

A bachelor’s degree or college diploma in business administration, commerce or a related discipline is usually required.

A graduate degree in business administration may be required.

Some establishments may require management consultants to be certified by a provincial management consulting association.

Certification as a quality auditor may be required for some occupations in this unit group.

Occupations in health information management consulting may require certification by the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).

The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, available through a program conducted by the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts in the United States, may be required by some employers.
