Our Esthetics program was developed to prepare students with knowledge in skin care and human anatomy, nutrition, and the importance of bacteriology and decontamination to both the esthetician and client. Students will gain skills and experience in a variety of services, including nail technology, skin care, manicures and pedicures, make-up artistry, body treatments, and facials. An understanding of business management skills for salons and spas, along with basic computer skills, will also be covered. This program meets all Ministry of Training for Colleges and Universities Esthetics Subject Specific Standards, and is curriculum developed by the National Association of Career Colleges.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS GAINED The program is designed to develop expertise over a wide variety of areas. Students learn about anatomy, physiology, pathology, histology and terminology to the provision of specialized esthetic treatments and services. They adhere to Occupational Health and Safety, hygiene, sanitation and Infection Prevention and Control Best Practice guidelines, industry standards and regulations. Students perform a variety of specialized skin and body care treatments being aware of procedure, room preparation, contraindications, safety precautions and maintaining client comfort and modesty. Students learn treatments like facials, body treatments, cosmetic massages, manicures, pedicures, basic make-up applications, lash and brow enhancements and hair removal. Students learn to use a range of specialized equipment and products and how to select and recommend esthetic products and ingredients to clients. Graduates will know how to develop and maintain customer service strategies that meet and adapt to individual need and expectations in accordance with professional standards and ethics. Students learn business skills required for the successful establishment and operation of a small esthetic business in a salon or spa environment. All effort is made to give exposure to the theoretical as well as practical aspects of the course. After completing your diploma in Esthetics, you can schedule appointments, maintain records, perform treatments, ensure confidentiality and work in an established spa or consider opening your own small business. It presents the importance of professional conduct, image, code of ethics and common courtesies related to clients and co-workers within the workplace. Interpersonal Skills: This module outlines the importance of good interpersonal and communication skills in the esthetics industry. Topics such as time management, setting goals and creating good study habits will be explored. Bacteriology and Decontamination: This module provides a basic knowledge of bacteria, infection, and procedures and guidelines to help the esthetician eliminate and prevent the spread of disease. IPAC and the Bloodborne Pathogen Act are covered as well as an understanding of WHMIS. Cells, Anatomy and Physiology of the Skin: This module focuses on understanding the basic structural units of the human body and the composition, structure and function of the skin. This module also explores cell metabolism, and the affect that aging, sun damage and hormones have on the skin. Human Anatomy and Physiology for Esthetics: This module outlines human anatomy, physiology and histology, the different body systems and their relation to the practice of esthetics. Disorders and Diseases of the Skin: This module will enable the learner to recognize common skin diseases, disorders and disturbances; determine those that can be treated by the esthetician and those that require medical treatment. Nutrition for Esthetics: This module outlines basic nutrition and how it can affect the health and certain conditions of the skin and body. It will also cover how certain habits can affect the health of the skin. Basic Chemistry, Cosmetic Ingredients and Product Analysis: This module outlines the elements of basic chemistry and chemical processes as it relates to cosmetic products, their ingredients and various formulations. Various product forms and uses in the practice of esthetics are discussed. Facials: This module outlines all aspects of conducting various professional facial treatments including: specific instructions on how to conduct a client consultation, prepare implements, products and treatment rooms, the ability to recognize and identify general skin types and specific skin conditions to determine the most appropriate treatment recommendations, classical methods of facial massage and facial step sequences. Electrotherapy for Estheticians: This module outlines the basics of electricity, enabling the learner to operate a variety of machines and apparatus used in the esthetic profession knowledgeably and safely. Hair Removal: This module outlines permanent and temporary hair removal techniques and practices, and their effect on the skin. Manicures and Pedicures: This module provides basic knowledge and fundamental techniques required to perform professional manicure and pedicure treatments. Make-Up Artistry, Lash and Brow Enhancement: This module outlines the basics in colour theory, facial shapes and features. The various techniques of professional make-up artistry and lash/brow enhancements, such as tinting and lash extensions, are introduced. Cosmetic Massage and Spa Body Therapies: This module outlines the various cosmetic massage treatments and body therapies related to the esthetic industry. Salon/Spa Business Management: This module outlines important aspects of successful salon/spa business management skills. Career Planning and Employment Skills: This module outlines important aspects of career planning, gaining employable skills and basic computer literacy. Job Shadowing Placement: Students will job shadow professional estheticians to gain an understanding of the salon business and working with clientele. Students will be responsible for shadowing a variety of procedures as Estheticians service clients. WHY THIS PROGRAM? Esthetics is a program that opens the doors to employment in the ever growing industry. Students who are skilled in treatments and in customer services will be absorbed quickly into the workforce at Spas, Nail Salons, Hair Salons, or many will decide to open their own small business.? The program offers you the opportunity to work flexible hours with full time as well as part time positions which are offered throughout the year along. ASSOCIATED NATIONAL OCCUPATION CLASSIFICATION (NOC) CODES After earning a Diploma in Esthetics, you are eligible for positions falling under the following NOC Code NOC -6482 ? Esthetician, nail technician, skin care technician. NOC -6562 Estheticians, electrologists and related occupations Common Job Titles which you can apply for include ? beautician, beauty care specialist, cosmetician, cosmetologist, dermal therapist, electrologist, electrolysis technician, esthetician, facial treatment operator, hair removal specialist, manicurist, nail care technician, nails and lashes applicator, pedicurist, skin care consultant, and skin care specialist. JOB FUNCTIONS Estheticians perform some or all of the following duties: Schedule and confirm esthetic appointments, receive and communicate messages for co-workers Communicate to management any and all occurrences?? involving staff or guests that require attention Having working knowledge and understanding of all services and products while educating and informing clients in these areas Actively promoting treatments, services, sessions, retail, promotions and/or discounts?? Perform skin analysis, retail, professional product selection and client consultation Perform facial treatments with or without machines on a variety of skin types and conditions Analyze facial skin tones and apply make-up, day, night, bridal, specialty, corrective and camouflage Perform basic and specialized manicures, pedicures and nail enhancements Remove superfluous hair from the body of any person by means of temporary hair removal methods Perform spa body treatments and various types of cosmetic massage Practice and uphold the standards of appropriate infection prevention and sanitary control practices in order to prevent the transmission of contamination Practice appropriate scope of practice and know limitations when performing all treatments Perform prep work, properly clean and restock rooms, dispensaries as required JOB REQUIREMENTS Job openings in the field of Esthetics usually seek a person who has completed college or other equivalent diplomas. Employers are looking for language skills, including the ability to follow written and verbal directions, speak and listen effectively. Students should have planning and organizing skills and be able to work well with others. Graduates must have knowledge of beauty products and the ability to communicate information to customers as well as provide skin care advice, body care/treatments, exfoliation treatments, facials, foot massages, manicures, pedicures, skin care, skin peels, waxing, relaxation massages, and wraps, using various machines in beauty salons and spas. EMPLOYMENT AREAS & PROSPECTS The Esthetics program develops skills which provide you with the opportunity of employment in any spa or salon setting. The most common employment opportunities arise in Spas, Nail Salons, and Hair Salons; however, many graduates will decide to open their own small business. * Theoretical components will be conducted in virtual classroom; hands-on component requiring practical demonstrations will be scheduled onsite in limited class size to maintain social distance and/or when COVID-19 resolves
