Introduction to Esthetics
This module introduces the student to the field of Esthetics. Topics covered include the history and evolution of the esthetics and spa industry including career opportunities available to estheticians; the importance of professional image, conduct and ethical practice; and importance of good interpersonal, communication and time management skills.
Manicure and Pedicure
This course focuses on providing students with the basic knowledge and fundamental techniques required to perform professional manicures, professional pedicures and related hand and foot treatments. The course also provides students with a basic knowledge of microbiology and infection, and introduces safe work practices, procedures and guidelines to ensure infection control and physical safety.
Hair Removal
This course outlines various methods of permanent and temporary hair removal techniques and practices with a strong focus on the theory and practice of hair removal using different types of wax and sugaring. Hair structure and growth are also studied.
Esthetician Skin Care 1
This course focuses on the skin, skin care and treatments for the face, neck and decollette. Topics include the anatomy and physiology of the skin, skin diseases and disorders, chemistry as it relates to the ingredients and formulations of cosmetic products, skin analysis and facial treatments with and without machines. Students gain knowledge and practice in client consultations, preparation of implements, products and treatment rooms, identifying general skin types and specific skin conditions to determine the most appropriate treatment recommendations, classical methods of facial massage and facial step sequences. A study of the endocrine, respiratory, circulatory, reproductive, integumentary, neurologic and digestive systems including nutrition as they apply to the practice of esthetics is also covered.
Esthetician Skin Care 2
This advanced skin care course teaches the properties of essential oils and the therapeutic power of aromatherapy. Students will learn about the environmental enemies of the skin and characteristics of aging skin. Treatments taught will include a variety of specialized procedures including glycolic peels, anti-aging treatments, non-surgical face lifting, microdermabrasion, and aromatherapy facial treatments.
Make-up Artistry
This course introduces the student to professional make-up artistry and the theory behind corrective techniques, colour coordination, colour psychology and harmony. Students will learn how to apply make up for various situations including black and white and colour photography, day, evening, glamour and bridal make up.
Spa Therapies and Massage
This course focuses on specific cosmetic massage and body therapy treatments related to the field of esthetics. Topics include various massage techniques, body and scalp massage, body treatments for cellulite, slimming and toning, and full body exfoliation. A study of the skeletal, muscular, lymphatic and excretory systems as they apply to the practice of esthetics is also included.
Small Business Management
In this course students will gain practical knowledge of salon policies, booking appointments, reception services and business set up. Students will develop customer service strategies that meet and adapt to client needs and expectations in accordance with professional standards and ethics. This course also introduces job search skills. Students will learn how to write a professional resume and covering letter and how to prepare for an interview.
