Child & Youth Worker

Learn via live instructor-led virtual lectures completed online.The Child and Youth Worker program is designed to prepare students for work with children and youth in need. Students will expand their knowledge and acquire the necessary tools for client support and working with those facing a variety of behavioural and/or physical problems.This program includes classroom-based studies and on-the-job training through placements at a variety of social agencies and centres.Main DutiesChild & Youth Care Workers perform some or all of the following duties:Interview clients to obtain case history and background informationAssess clients? relevant skill strengths and deficitsAssist clients to sort out options and develop plans of action while providing necessary support and assistanceAssist clients in locating and utilizing community resources including legal, medical and financial assistance, housing, employment, transportation, assistance with moves, day care and other referral servicesPrepare intake reportsCounsel clients living in group homes and half-way houses, supervise their activities and assist in pre-release and release planningParticipate in the selection and admission of clients to appropriate programsAssess and investigate eligibility for social benefitsMeet with clients to assess their progress, give support and discuss any difficulties or problemsRefer clients to other social servicesAdvise and aid recipients of social assistance and pensionsProvide crisis intervention and emergency shelter servicesImplement and organize the delivery of specific services within the communityImplement life skills workshops, substance abuse treatment programs, behaviour management programs, youth services programs and other community and social service programs under the supervision of social services or health care professionalsAssist in evaluating the effectiveness of treatment programs by tracking clients? behavioural changes and responses to interventionsMaintain contact with other social service agencies and health care providers involved with clients to provide information and obtain feedback on clients? overall progressCo-ordinate the volunteer activities of human service agencies, health care facilities and arts and sports organizationsMaintain program statistics for purposes of evaluation and research.May supervise social service support workers and volunteers.Private College Versus Public Community CollegeWhat is different about attending a Private Career College like Gates College VS Public Community Colleges like Fleming College, Confederation College, Sault College or Durham College?Gates College is?registered as a private career college and programs approved as vocational programs under the?Private Career Colleges Act, 2005.?Public Community Colleges such as Fleming College, Confederation College, Sault College and Durham College operate under a separate branch.?There are benefits you may experience when attending a Private Career College like Gates College, that the Public Community Colleges may not offer.For example:Small Class SizesOne course at a time Modular Based LearningFixed Block SchedulesFrequent Start DatesThis program is currently being delivered in an Instructor-led online environmentA Gates College student will find that our Campuses and our Online experience is very student-focused and always puts the student?s goals first!Program Outline Child & Youth Workers will learn:?Introduction to Early Learning and Care?Roles, Responsibilities, and the Reflective Practitioner?Multiple Perspectives of Child, Family and Community?Introduction to prenatal and infant development?Introduction to toddler development?Introduction to preschool and school-age development?Observation and Documentation?Responsive Relationships and Guiding Behavior?Program Planning and Philosophical Approaches to Learning?Written Communications Skills?Health and Safety
