Each course includes hands on training in carpentry.? For example, in the Joinery course, students learn about the pros and cons of using different types of joints, and then they work hands-on in the Woodshop to construct joints.? In this way, theoretical aspects of program are immediately followed up with hands-on practical training.
At the close of the Cabinetry courses, students complete a 3-week course which is strictly hands-on called Woodshop Furniture Project where they work as a team to design and construct a china cabinet, reception console, book case, or other type of cabinet.?
At the close of the Restoration courses, students complete a 3-week course which is strictly hands-on called Woodshop Restoration Project where they work as a team to design and restore a chair, a table, and/or a chest/cabinet.
The program includes how to purchase and use the various tools and saws, how to determine quantities, where to source suppliers, how to choose proper materials and arrange a discount, and more.
Woodworkers?must demonstrate decision making, job task planning and organizing, numeracy, project management, problem solving, and working with others.

PROGRAM OUTLINE

AutoCAD Level 1?? The basics of AutoCAD so that students can use it in a productive manner as it pertains to renovation and construction.? Students learn to switch between Classic and Drafting and Annotation workspaces, and well as modelspace and paperspace.? Students will learn to work with basic draw commands, add layers, text and text styles, colours, linetypes, and lineweights.? Students will learn to set up a basic layout with a properly scaled viewpoint, and plot the layout accordingly.? ?
Woodshop Tools and Equipment ? This course introduces students to the tools, materials, and equipment which are normally found in a woodshop.? Students learn about measuring and layout tools, tool safety and shop care. They also learn about different types of wood, wood warping and prevention, and wood movement.? The course also includes an introduction to designing furniture.
Project Management for Construction?Introduction to project management specifically as it pertains to construction and renovation. Students learn about building a project plan and the project management process.? They learn about budgeting and estimating to keep within the project?s triple constraints.? Students learn about various stakeholders for a project, about leadership, and meeting effectiveness.
Joinery – Students learn the pros and cons of using different joints in carpentry based on tensile strength, type of project, type of wood, available tools, and time and cost.? Students learn how to make a variety of joints including Butt Joint, Mortise and Tenon Woodworking Joints, Biscuit Joint, Bridle Joint, Dado Joint, Dovetail Joint, Finger Joint, Lap Wood Joint, Pocket-Hole Joinery, Rabbet Woodworking Joints, Tongue and Groove Woodworking Joints, and Dowel Joint.
Box and Case Construction – This course teaches students how to build boxes and cases for furniture.? Students learn how to design and build a box, shelves, and drawers for furniture.? They also learn about drawer hardware, and various types of shelf joinery.? The instructor does a demonstration with the students on how to build a box and case, which prepares them for their woodshop project.
Building Doors – This course teaches students about the various types of doors, door pulls, door hardware, latches, and how to hang a door using various types of hinges.
Bases and Feet – Students learn how to make various types of bases for cabinetry.? They learn about scrolled and mitered feet, rollers and casters, and foot varieties.? Students also watch a demonstration on how to design and build a plant stand from start to finish.
Frame Construction – Students learn how to design chairs for comfort and strength and insert various styles of legs using mortises and tenons.? Students learn about scrolled brackets, face frames, face frame anatomy, and panel construction.
Tabletops and Work Surfaces – Student learn the various types of tabletops and tables which are possible to construct, as well as the types of special edges which can be added to table tops and work surfaces to enhance their beauty.? Students learn about hardware solutions, and leaves, and spend half the course involved in a practical demonstration on building a table top in the Woodshop.
Staining and Colour Matching – Students learn staining basics, colour matching for old and new wood, and how to use the finisher?s wheel. They earn about various types stain matching challenges and how to overcome them.? Students also learn how to paint wood, and how to scrap and sand old painted items.? Students engage in a practical to stain a plant stand which was built by them during the Bases and Feet course.
Woodshop Furniture Project – Students take all of the knowledge and skills they have gained in all earlier furniture building courses to put them into practice during this hands-on course.? Depending on the number of students in the class, students will work as a team to create a china cabinet, bookcase, reception console, or other furniture piece from scratch and of their own combined designs.? Completed woodshop items are intended to remain on display at CIMT College in perpetuity.
Restoration Tools and Materials – In this course, students learn about and how to use the tools, materials, and machines required for restoration, including tools, clamps, veneers, vices, and various types of saws.? Students enjoy two field trips, first to a tool shop, and second to a restoration furniture supplier.? Students will choose pieces of furniture like chests, tables, and chairs, which they will then restore during the remainder of the courses on restoration.
Restoring Surfaces and Finishes – This course teaches students to repair the most common concerns in surfaces, like blisters, dents, fading from sunlight, and water marks.? Students have practical training in veneers, polishing, and cleaning.
Restoring Chairs – Students learn to dismantle, repair, and reassemble a restored chair.? Students also learn about basic upholstery, upholstery finishes, and how to estimate time and costs for chair restoration repair.
Restoring Tables – Students learn to dismantle, repair, and reassemble the restored table.? They learn about how to repair a carved table and do a practical on this restoration skill.? Students also learn about table anatomy, types of tables throughout history, and how to estimate time and costs for a table restoration repair.
Restoring Chests and Cabinets – Students learn about chest and cabinet construction, and how to dismantle and rebuild this type of furniture.? Students learn to repair a carcass, top, dustboard, lining, and drawer.? Students learn to install glazing or panels on a door.? Students improve their skills working with dovetail joints.
Woodshop Restoration Project – Students take all of the knowledge and skills they have gained in all earlier restoration courses to put them into practice during this hands-on course.? Depending on the number of students in the class, students will work as a team to restore the chair, table, chest, and/or cabinet which they purchased.? Completed restoration items are intended to remain on display at CIMT College in perpetuity.
Computer Fundamentals and Internet?? Trains on basic computer skills, creating and managing documents and using internet.
Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint?? Introduces word processing, spread sheets, PowerPoint presentations.
Microsoft Outlook?- Explores the basic and advanced features of Outlook.
Professional Skills- Trains on interpersonal skills required for successful induction and working in professional world.

WHY THIS PROGRAM?

Over 50% of the program is hands-on working with tools and woodshop equipment.? Plus, students spend 6 weeks in the Woodshop building cabinets and restoring furniture which they were allowed to choose themselves, making this a truly hands-on program that will open the door to employment in the ever growing carpentry, cabinetry, and renovation industries.? With the wide variety of training in this program, students will be absorbed quickly into the workforce at various carpentry companies, restoration businesses, or if they prefer, they could start their own business and become self-employed.

After pursuing a Diploma in Cabinetry and Furniture Technician, students you are eligible for positions falling under the NOC Code 7272, Cabinetmakers.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Cabinetry and Furniture Technicians?perform some or all of the following duties:

Study plans, specifications or drawings of furniture to be made, or prepare specifications.
Operate woodworking machines, such as power saws, jointers, mortisers and shapers, and use hand tools to cut, shape and form parts and components.

Trim joints and fit parts and subassemblies together to form complete unit using glue and clamps and reinforce joints using nails, screws or other fasteners.

Sand wooden surfaces and apply veneer, stain or polish to finished products.
Repair, restore, or restyle wooden furniture, fixtures and related products.
May estimate amount, type and cost of materials required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Job openings in the fields of carpentry, cabinetry, and restoration usually seek a person who has completed college or other equivalent diplomas, and/or has experience working hands-on, not just theoretical, as practical knowledge of is considered to be essential. Employers are also looking for manual dexterity and an ability to lift up to 50 lbs, and demonstrate physical strength and stamina. Employees must be reliable, punctual and willing to improve on their skills. Employees must have attention to detail, in order to measure and check product length, width and notch locations. Everyone must be safety conscious and willing to maintain a clean and orderly work environment, combined with good organization skills. The ability to be a team player is essential since all tasks will require close collaboration with co-workers. For self-employment for delivery of restored pieces or installation of furniture, a Drivers License is preferred, although not always required.

EMPLOYMENT AREAS & PROSPECTS

There is a strong and stable job market for people in carpentry, restoration, and cabinetry because as long as we have furniture to sit on, or need kitchen or office cabinets, a diploma as a Carpentry and Furniture Technician is always in demand, no matter what is going on with the economy.
